If you've decided to brave the big world of customer.io email and sms marketing alone (we won't take it personally), this article is for you. Understanding customer events is the best way to get the most out of your campaigns, allowing you to better target your customers and successfully bring your email and sms lists back for more.

 

Our customer.io integration has been built in-house by our expert team of developers, specifically with competition businesses in mind. Below is a list of events the integration tracks, so you can use them to tailor your campaigns. But first.... what even is an Event? It's actually very simple. An event is an action your customers perform on your website. From registration to order completion, you can understand exactly what your customer is doing on your site. And what's even better is that you can use this information to create email and sms campaigns to strategically target customers in ways they actually respond to. Here is a complete list of events.  

order_completed

This event is triggered when an order is marked as complete. Data Fields:

  • total - The total amount of the order

  • email - Customer’s email address

  • orderId - The unique ID of the order

Special Cases:

  • For registered customers, this event will include all user attributes

  • For guest users, this event will include basic information including marketing opt-in preferences

product_added_to_cart 

Triggered when a product is added to the cart. Data Fields:

  • product_id - The ID of the product

  • variation_id - The ID of the production variation (if applicable)

  • product_name - Name of the product

  • product_price - The price of each product

  • quantity - The quantity of product added to the cart

  • total_price - The total price of product (product price x quantity)

  • currency - The store’s currency code (eg: GBP = £)

  • email - Customer’s email (if applicable)

checkout_started

Triggered when a customer views the checkout page. Data Fields:

  • cart_total - The total amount (value) of products in the cart

  • cart_tax - The total amount of tax

  • cart_discount - The total amount of discount

  • cart_items_count - The number of items in the cart

  • currency - The store’s currency code (eg: GBP = £)

  • cart_items - Detailed information about each item in the cart

    • product_id

    • variation_id

    • product_name

    • quantity

    • price

    • total 

  • email - Customer’s email address (if available)

 

payment_completed

Triggered when payment for an order is completed. Data Fields:

  • order_id - The ID of the order

  • order_total - The total amount of the order

  • order_currency - The currency code for the order (eg: GBP = £)

  • payment_method - The payment method code

  • payment_method_title - The human-readable payment method name

  • billing_email - The customer’s billing email address

order_status_changed

Triggered when an order’s status changes Data Fields:

  • order_id - The ID of the order

  • from_status - The previous order status

  • to_status - The new order status

  • order_total - The total amount of the order

  • order_currency - The currency code for the order (eg: GBP = £)

  • billing_email - The customer’s billing email address

customer_created

Triggered when a new customer account is created (a customer signs up). Data Fields:

  • customer_id - The ID of the newly created customer

  • username - The customer’s username

  • email - The customer’s email address 

  • first_name - The customer’s first name

  • last_name - The customer’s last name

  • password_generated - Whether or not a password was automatically generated

product_viewed

Triggered when a customer views a product page Data Fields:

  • product_id - The ID of the product being viewed

  • product_name - The name of the product

  • product_price - The price of the product

  • product_type - Type of the product (simple, variable, competition, etc)

  • product_url - The URL (link) of the product page

  • product_categories - The categories the product belongs to

  • currency - The store’s currency code (eg: GBP = £)

  • email - Customer’s email address (if applicable)

cart_abandoned

Triggered when a cart is abandoned Data Fields:

  • abandoned_at - Time when cart was abandoned

  • minutes_since_abandonment - Minutes since the cart was abandoned

  • cart_items - Array (list) of cart items (see below for an example of what a product looks like in this list)

    • product_id - Product identifier

    • variation_id - Variation identifier

    • product_name - The name of the product

    • quantity - Amount of product in the cart

    • price - Price per product in the cart

    • total - Total price of product in the cart (quantity x price)

    • product_url - A link to the product page

    • product_categories - Array (list) of the categories this product belongs to

  • cart_totals 

    • subtotal - Subtotal amount

    • tax - Total tax amount 

    • discount - Total discount amount

    • total - Total amount after tax & discounts

    • count - Amount of unique products in the cart

    • items_count - Amount of total products in the cart

  • currency - The store’s currency code (eg: GBP = £)

  • cart_url - A link to the abandoned cart

  • checkout_url - A link to checkout the abandoned cart

  • email - Email address for user who abandoned the cart 

email_signup

Triggered when a user signs up to the email form (only present on sites with the Zap Competitions email sign up form enabled). Data Fields:

  • email - The email address used to sign up to the newsletter

  • first_name - The customer’s first name

  • last_name - The customer’s last name
