Why Do Payments Fail?

Failures happen, whether we like it or not. It’s a little annoying, but — chin up! — it’s nothing that can’t be fixed. What’s important is to learn the causes of these failures, and deal with them as they arise. 

⚡Common Payment Failures

Chances are you’ve experienced a payment failure or two in the past. It happens. 

It happens to your players, too, and if you want to continue providing excellent customer service (which you no doubt do!), then it’s best to be aware of some of these failures. Y’know, in case your players ask what’s up. Always good to be prepared, and have an answer up your sleeve. 

Without further ado, here’s some of the reasons payments fail:

  1. You don’t have enough funds in your account — gotta top up!

  2. Suspected fraud. This can happen if your site started using a new payment gateway, or there’s been a migration and the endpoints are different, so the bank thinks it’s someone else pretending to be your company  

  3. Several back-to-back orders have been put through, which your bank has flagged as fraud

  4. Bad internet connection (booo!)

  5. Timeout error — occurs when a customer takes too long to complete their order

  6. The gateway’s busy and overworked. This happens when too many people try to put an order in at once

  7. Error on the gateway’s side 

  8. The gateway and the site aren’t on speaking terms. This means that the gateway doesn’t send the correct response back to the site to change the order. This is less common, but it can still happen, so it's best to be aware of it
